Health Notes: "Longevity"
Wine Wine Wine ....and...??? dark Chocolate! Everyone, here is the scoop: "Chocolate 'cuts death rate in heart attack survivors.'....In the Journal of Internal Medicine."
Heart attack survivors noted to be eating chocolate 2 or more times each week reduced their risk of dying from heart disease about threefold compared to non-users. Smaller quantities of chocolate conferred less protection, but some. Earlier research had established a strong link between cocoa-based confections and lowered blood pressure and is thought to improve blood flow.
Chocolate is known to cut the rate of heart related mortality in healthy older men and in post-menopausal women. The anti-oxidants in cocoa, not in sweets in general, protect against free radicals which could damage cells and are thought to play a role in cancer, heart disease and the aging process.
  • So, everyone, the double whammy effect of combining chocolate and wine did not hurt Jeanne Louise Calment, the oldest recorded human in the modern era having lived 122 years. She was born in Arles, France in 1875, She drank port wine every day and ate more than two pounds of chocolate each week. When Antonio Todde made it into the Guinness Book of World Records he loved to be 115 years old, born 1889 in a Sardinian mountain village. His secret of longevity was a glass or two a day of wine, which many other centenarians on the Isle of Sardinia attribute their survival to. The red wine he drank and his grandson produced came from grapes grown around the town of Nuoro. In China in 1998 the press discovered the longest living couple Li Guanghai, born 1897 and aged 101 years old and Wang Fangzhen, born 1896, aged 102 years old, noted to drink homemade wine and strong tea daily, with no serious diseases since age 40. England's Queen Elizabeth, born August 4, 1900, died at age 101. "Queen Mum" attributed her longevity to her genes AND the glass of red wine she had daily.
  • Our Four Sisters Ranch wines were recently paired with chocolates from:

Reagan Presidential Library Wine Pouring

Four Sisters Ranch Wines served at the Reagan Presidential Library
We were honored to be selected for the California Wine and Gourmet Food Experience event held October 29, 2009 at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley. The Four Sisters Ranch Syrah was paired with "roasted duck breast served with Japanese PUmpkin". This event had a unique progression of sumptious dinner small plates and magnificent deserts with 10 California wines. This month, December, again our wine was served with a holiday party at the Reagan Library and our Cabernet Sauvignon was enjoyed by all.

Health Notes:
Did you know the longest living man and women on record as of 2004 each drank one glass of red wine daily and the woman ate 2 lbs of chocolate each week!!
Did you know that you can reduce your risk of a heart attack and stroke by drinking red wine along with the POLYMEAL DIET? Here's how to decrease by 76% your cardiovascular risk:
  • Red wine: 4-5 ounces each day (Women: remember to supplement your folic acid found in a multivitamin with minerals when consuming wine.)
  • Dark Chocolate: 3.5 oz. each day
  • cold water fish oils/omega 3 fatty acids such as is found in tuna, salmon, mackeral or in mercury free fish oil capsules
  • almonds: 2.5 oz. each day
  • garlic: one clove daily or "no odor garlic pills"
  • fresh fruits and vegetables/high fiber foods, 400 grams each day, such as 2 and 2/3 apples or high fiber oatmeal or oat bran

Also, consider exercise, proven to slightly lower cholesteral.

Eating these foods and drinking the wine could be expected to prolong life by as much as 7 years in men and nearly 5 years in women by reducing cardiovascular events. (Source: Journal, BMJ 2004;329:1447-50) ............................Serena Friedman, M.D. and grape grower/wine producer
